Fall Maintenance Tips For NoCo Homeowners

It’s been a good long while since we’ve gotten the chance to sit down and write a blog for our readers. Overall, that’s a good thing; it’s been a busy summer of laying concrete here at Cesar’s Concrete, Northern Colorado’s top concrete contractor. We’ve been in Fort Collins, Windsor, Loveland, Longmont, Berthoud, Greeley, and pretty much everywhere else north of Denver, laying down patios, driveways, walkways, and commercial projects as well!

We didn’t sit down to write today’s blog to provide an itemized list of all the concrete projects we completed this summer, however. As the title already gave away, today’s blog is all about helping our fellow homeowners out. Whether you are new to the area or are a Colorado Native, it’s always helpful to be reminded of a few fall maintenance tips to make sure your home and property have been properly winterized before the cold hits.

And guess what? The cold is about to hit — it’s October, ladies and gentlemen!

So, keep reading if you are interested in learning what you need to do to make sure your home is ready for winter, after which we’ll remind you exactly why you should choose Cesar’s Concrete for all of your upcoming projects!

Fall Maintenance Tips

  • Clean your gutters – While the leaves are only beginning to tan, it’s important to remember to clean your gutters out so they don’t get clogged. Clogged gutters can cause serious problems to the structural integrity of your home, including roof and wall leaks, wood rot, and damage to the gutters themselves. These issues are often difficult to spot and repair until the damage has already been done. It’s often quite expensive to fix as well, so just save yourself the hassle and don’t put this important chore off!
  • Drain your sprinkler system – Did you know that even buried irrigation lines can freeze? That’s why it’s very important to make sure you drain your irrigation systems so that busted pipes and sprinkler heads don’t cause you an expensive headache (as early as this Thursday, when the temperature will drop below freezing!) All you need to do is turn off the water to the system at the main value, shut off the automatic controller, if you have one, open all drain valves to remove water from the system, and then remove all above-ground sprinkler heads, being sure to shake the water out of them. Then you should be good to go!
  • Drainage – The final tip we’d like to provide in today’s post is one that often goes overlooked. Granted, checking your furnace, roof, and gutters are very important tasks, but directing your drainage to flow away from the foundation of your house is arguably just as crucial. To inspect this element of your home, take a look at the soil, rocks, and other material directly adjacent to the foundation. You want to make sure it slopes away from the home, at least six vertical inches over ten feet. If you don’t, it could eventually lead to cracks in the foundation. If you do end up finding some cracks, give Cesar’s Concrete a call, because that’s our area of expertise!
